Long before the world had James Bond or Hercule Poirot in Urdu translation, the readers of the subcontinent had someone entirely their own — Ibne Safi, the pen name of Asrar Ahmad, born on 26 July 1928 in the village of Nara, district Allahabad, British India.
Growing up in a humble family, Asrar was a restless, curious mind. He studied at Aligarh Muslim University, where he began writing short humour pieces for children’s magazines under various pen names before finally settling on “Ibne Safi” — a name he chose after his father’s hometown of Safipur.
